Body Breakdowns: Tales of Illness and Recovery edited by Janis Harper

by William K. Stearn

Body Breakdowns is a book that gently and sincerely pokes at the very lining of our existence with a sharp stick.

This book’s short memoirs by experienced writers makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read; the writers own very personal, always touching stories about their bodies in differing stages of breakdown tug at heartstrings and emotions and illustrate what it is to be human and a part of this fragile thing we call life.

How we deal emotionally and mentally with our sicknesses, illnesses and injuries is largely a mystery; a sad lonely mystery that should not be. Body Breakdowns accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do: pierce through the dark loneliness we all feel when our body breaks down. It draws for us some semblance of sanity, hope and community where otherwise there would be none.

This book is a fabulously genuine read for anyone who is or has ever been a patient, or anyone with a loved one dealing with a body breakdown. It should most certainly be mandatory reading for physicians and anyone even remotely concerned about their bedside manner. (Anvil)
