Frank Buckles, the last living U.S. World War I veteran, has died, a spokesman for his family said Sunday. He was 110.

The last living U.S. veteran of the First World War died Sunday, February 28, and with him the fading memories of an era no one will ever remember again.

Frank Buckles served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe and rose to the ranks of corporal before the end of the Great War. Before his passing his stories were documented by DeJonge, a Michigan portrait photographer who interviewed the last surviving veterans of WWI. This leaves the world with only two living WWI veterans, both of whom are British.

Buckles’ casket will be on display at the Capitol Rotunda if proposed resolutions make it past lawmakers. Rest in peace, last Doughboy standing.
